Geronimo!- Genius is Dead

Chicago fuzz rock trio Geronimo! are set to release the third installment of their on going Buzz Yr Girlfriend cassette series, Buzz Yr Girlfriend: Volume 3 - The Metal David Byrne, on March 29th via Exploding in Sound Records. "Genius is Dead" is the first single from the release and it's a fuckin' doozy. After a bulky display of clamoring drums, the track dives forward into a signature explosion of loud guitars and shrieks from Kelly Johnson. The track instantly reminds me of one of my favorite 90s bands in Mudhoney, but with more refinement in the way they organize their noise.

I admit I'm late to the Geronimo! party, but I've started to go through their short history this week and I'm loving every minute of it. Their debut album, Fuzzy Dreams, runs the gamut of 90s alternative sounds as they toy with distorted guitars, fuzzy grunge flourishes, sweeps of introspective indie rock, and quirky college rock experiments; the first two Buzz Yr Girlfriend tapes dance around basement grunge demo dubs (vol. 1) and post-punk pieces (vol. 2); and last year's Exanimate had a more psychedelic and experimental flair peeking through their vintage blankets of noise. Thanks to the trustworthy ears of new friends Exploding In Sound Records, I've found a surrogate to a lot of my favorite bands growing up (Mudhoney, Hum, Archers of Loaf) that's worth keeping on the radar.

Check out Geronimo!'s releases on their Bandcamp page, which are all available as a name-your-own-price download.
